A Sunday open house is planned to celebrate the completion of the 40th house in the Ann Arbor Student Home Building Industry Program.

A Huron High School student works last fall at the building site on Ann Arbor's east side. The house has been completed and is up for sale. An open house is Sunday.

The open house at 2387 Earl Shaffer Drive, just north of Dhu Varren Road  in the Sumerset Neighborhood, will be from 1-4 p.m. and the public is invited to view the home and student work. The 2,200-square-foot home is now available for sale and is listed at $300,000.

Twenty nine Ann Arbor high school students participated in the building of the house during the 2009-10 school year starting the home’s foundation last September and finishing it at the end of the school year.

The turnkey house features granite countertops, energy-efficient appliances, a maintenance-free exterior as well as a finished basement, 3½ baths and is fully landscaped.

The Ann Arbor Student Building Industry Program started in 1970 as a partnership between the Ann Arbor Public Schools and local business professionals, provides students an educational experience while constructing a three-bedroom home during their junior or senior year of high school.  Students participate in all aspects of construction while learning skills such as teamwork, leadership and pride in a job well done.

A 25-member board comprised of professionals from the community including builders, real estate professionals, bankers, educators and other community leaders oversees the student building program.

Expenses including building sites, materials and memorial college scholarships have been funded by private cash and in-kind donations, said board members. Over 40 years, about $100,000 in scholarships has been given out to students. About 1,000 students have been involved.
