Ann Arbor Open School is a K-8 progressive education institution with more than 500 students and a 35-year history. The school maintains extensive waiting lists and high demand for kindergarten enrollment. Key features:

  • Multi-age classrooms where students of different ages learn together
  • Democratic structure giving students input in curriculum and staff input in school practices
  • Flexible curriculum emphasizing project-based and experiential learning
  • Graduates perform at or above peer level from other middle schools
  • High success rates in world languages, fine arts, and instrumental music

The school focuses on personalized academic and social-emotional development, implementing visible thinking strategies and restorative justice practices, which has resulted in minimal discipline issues.
