Eight students were certified as the district’s first Teen Certified Emergency Response Team, or CERT, during a March 8 event at Huron High School. The team was certified thanks to the work of Lynn Boland, Life Sciences teacher at Huron, and Mike Loper of Patriot Services Corp.
The team’s training was sponsored by the Readiness Emergency Management for Schools, or REMS, grant. The federal grant funds increased emergency safety response efforts in school districts. The district is in its second funding cycle for REMS; the current grant of $315,000 will allow more equipment to be purchased and emergency training to take place through next February.
Students who are certified for the Teen CERT include: Community High School’s Justin Weiland and the following students from Huron High School: Melissa Tykosky, Christine Gallarin, Nyeisha Hutson-Legette, Ambar Akhlas, Lauren Lakin, Valeria Islas-Montantes and Ashley Garzaniti.
