Advanced Ceramics students at Pioneer High School recently collaborated with Mallory Kairys’ kindergarten class at Dicken Elementary on a unique and creative project.
The kindergarten students created drawings of original characters after discussing what makes a character unique. These drawings were then passed along to Maribeth Sonsara, one of the art teachers at Pioneer High School.
Advanced Ceramics students selected a drawing and brought each character to life in clay. They used various techniques to complete their sculptures, including glazing, painting, and adding embellishments like wire, pipe cleaners, and glitter.
On May 23, the kindergartners took a field trip to Pioneer High School. They toured the E Wing visual and industrial arts classrooms, and in the ceramic studio, they were presented with their sculptures and met their high school artist collaborators. The visit included a giant slime-making party that students of all ages enjoyed. One high school senior said this was the best day they’ve had in school. The trip ended with a visit to Ted Emch’s computer science class, where the kindergartners got to ask questions and play video games created by the high school students.
“We have received a lot of positive feedback from students, parents, and teachers,” said Sonsara, “and already have many great ideas on how to expand this experience for next year.”
