Students from Huron, Pioneer, and Skyline high schools showcased their vocal talents at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) State Solo and Ensemble Festival on April 12, with several performers earning top honors.
Four Huron High School choir students—Paula Casillas-Lopez, Shannon Fiddy, Nico Haywood, and Rebekka Port—all received prestigious Division I “Excellent” ratings at the State festival. Each participant had to earn a Division I rating at the district level to qualify for the State competition, where they performed two songs and completed a sight-reading exercise for an adjudicator.
Rebekka Port was selected as one of only three top soloists from the entire festival site and will perform at the MSVMA All-State Festival at Michigan State University in May.
Paula Casillas-Lopez distinguished herself by being named an All-State alternate, placing her among the top four soloists of the day.

Pioneer High School made an impressive showing with 55 choir students participating in 28 events. Twenty-one Pioneer soloists received “Excellent” ratings, including seniors Roshan Kumar, Ainsley Maddock, Keira McDonald, Cecile Piffaretti, Izzy Ribick, and Rachel Sprauer. The school’s ensembles also performed remarkably well, with A Cappella Sopranos & Altos, A Cappella Tenors & Basses, Choralaires, Choraliers, and the Sophomore SSA Septet all receiving “Excellent” ratings.
The Pioneer A Cappella Choraliers earned additional recognition as one of the top five large ensembles at the State Solo & Ensemble South Site. Their recordings will be reviewed alongside other top ensembles for possible inclusion in the MSVMA All-State Outstanding Solo & Ensemble Recital.
Skyline High School also celebrated success with soloist Bella Gankin receiving a Division I rating. The school’s A Cappella Treble Ensemble, featuring performers Norah DeRosia, Kylie Dybdahl, Claire Hurley, Kate Kennedy, Grace Letzmann, Soph McClatchey, Isabella Orochena Abed, Annie Pasque, Zoe Sangsland, Ellie Westhoff, Eleanor Wing, and Isabel Yuan, also earned a Division I rating for their performance.
Congratulations, all!
