Bryant hosts the first farmers market of the school year as students make their own pickles and take home bags of fresh produce
Bryant Elementary welcomed local farmers and fresh produce to its campus on Wednesday. Every student participated in the hands-on learning experience, moving through the market to choose fresh produce while engaging directly with local farmers and food producers.
The event began with a pickling education station sponsored by Buchanan Oasis Farmstand.
Students then continued through the market, where they were invited to select fresh, locally grown produce provided by Argus Farms, Tom Maceri Produce Company, and The Common Market. Participating local farms included Oasis Farms, Hildebrand, Victory Farms, and Prochaska Farm.
The event was designed to strengthen students’ connections to farmers and food producers in their community, help them better understand where food comes from, and encourage them to try and enjoy fresh, local produce
Chartwells Assistant Director Sandra Short said that the Bryant Elementary Community loved seeing the support for local farmers. “Several parents and PTO members commented on this as they dropped off their students in the morning,” said Short. “The pickle event hosted by Buchanan Oasis Farms was a hit. The students loved Fran teaching them how to make pickles from locally grown cucumbers.”
She noted that local farmers were represented by Kathy from Argus Farms, Matt from Tom Maceri, and Andrea from Common Market.
“The students loved learning about the importance of eating fresh fruit and vegetables and got to take a bag of produce home,” she said. “We thank Bryant Elementary and all of the local farms for supporting our event.”
