2 Community High teams move on to state mock trials

On Saturday, March 13, Community High School’s mock trial teams finished in first and third place among 41 teams competing at the Michigan High School Mock Trial Eastern Regional Tournament.

Both Community teams will compete in the state finals in Lansing on March 27. The winner of the state tournament will compete in the National tournament in Philadelphia in May.

Community High is the only team in the state to have sent a team to the state finals every year since 1993.

Team A finished in first place. Members include: Shadi Ahmadmehrabi, Savannah Dix, Mira Fishman, Jacob Garber, Michelle Grifka, Jack Kausch, Max Lewis, Michael Savage, Elise Wander and Garrett Wood.

Team B finished in third place. Members include: Zack Bayoff, Sara Burakoff, Cooper DePriest, Isaac Fink, Rianna Johnson-Levy, Julia Karr, Leah Penner, Eli Sugerman and Kelsey Teribery.

The bailiff/timekeeper is Matt Morehouse. The teacher coach is Cheryl Grace, the attorney coach is Griffith Dick and the drama coach is Billie Ochberg.

Parent Leela Kausch’s son, Jack, is a 10th-grader at Community and he has participated at the regional events for the past two years.

“It was a day filled with excitement, suspense, talent beyond belief, and such pride in our fine school which could produce such winners in the State of Michigan,” she wrote in a letter to Community High Dean Jennifer Hein. ” The thing that really stood out for me … was how our CHS students were so much better prepared, so much more knowledgeable about legal matters than the other teams.

“They deserved to win because they performed so well.”

Kausch credited Grace and her dedication to the program and for the many hours the coaches spent with students preparing them. “Our son has gained public speaking and debate skills he could not get anywhere else,” she added.
