Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of two-minute videos offering a quick glimpse into one of AAPS’ 32 schools. At AAPS, our vision is Every Child. Every Day. Every one fully sees, values, and celebrates each child for exactly who they are, the gifts and strengths they bring to this world.

Pathways to Success Academic Campus is an alternative high school for students needing or preferring a smaller, intimate academic environment that perhaps may be unavailable at larger, comprehensive high schools. Through multiple pathways and flexible learning opportunities such as online coursework, traditional direct instruction models, project-based learning, community internships, and dual enrollment opportunities where students can earn college credit, students will meet all the state of Michigan graduation requirements.

Pathways is designed to provide choice for students through unique class offerings in the core academic and elective areas. Pathways offers small classes and teacher–student ratios, business partnerships and internships, and day and evening options.

“Pathways is amazing because we see, hear, and care for the most traumatized and often underserved student population,” says Kristal Jaaskelainen, who teaches English and advises fellow teachers at the school. “I honestly couldn’t work anywhere else. (Principal Shaenu) Micou’s heart, orientation, and leadership guide our school to truly put relationships and care first. In my 20-plus years in education, few have done it better. That means our work doesn’t always look like more traditional classrooms because it can’t and it shouldn’t.”
