For more than 40 years Robin Mendenhall, Rick Hall, and Richard Ingram have all worked for Ann Arbor Public Schools, but they won’t be reporting for duty when school resumes in the fall. They were among the AAPS employees recognized for their service at the Retirement Celebration held last Thursday at Weber’s Inn. A total of 27 retirees were on hand, representing a combined 744 years of service to Ann Arbor students.
Superintendent Jeanice Swift thanked the retirees for the difference they have made in the lives of thousands of students. “We thank you for the tremendous investment you’ve made in our children, and we honor you for your lifetime of service and the legacy that you leave with us,” she said.
Serving as master of ceremonies Huron High School Athletic Director Dottie Davis shared brief bios of the retirees on hand and some of their future plans. Davis also got laughs from her advice. “My suggestion to you is not to be hasty, if you’re planning a facelift put that off because this time next year you’re going to be looking years younger. Who knew that retiring from teaching is better than botox?” Davis joked.
While retirement may be the end of a lengthy career at AAPS, the President of the Board of Education, Christine Stead hopes the staff stay connected to Ann Arbor schools and continue to make a positive difference for students. “We’re all so happy for you of course, and we’re all so sincerely going to miss all of you,” Stead said. “There really isn’t any replacing any of you, you all have a legacy that is the Ann Arbor Public Schools.”
