Survival skills and Great Lakes science: Freeman Environmental Education Center is the perfect setting for these Rec & Ed summer camps

Outdoor learning is a natural at the center

Students at AAPS’ Freeman Environmental Education Center are building shelters in the woods and studying Michigan’s geology as part of two new Rec & Ed hands-on summer day camps this summer, which put learning directly into nature.

In the Nutty Survivalists program, campers tackle a scenario where they’re stranded on a deserted island with only science to help them survive. They design shelters, build water filters, and learn what it takes to thrive outdoors.

Meanwhile, the Science of Michigan Camp takes students on a deep dive into the state’s natural systems. From Great Lakes ecology to local geology, campers explore the science behind Michigan’s landscapes through hands-on activities and field work.

Both day camps run Monday through Friday at the Freeman Center, located on Dixboro Road in Superior Township. There is one week left of the camps, which run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students are divided into two age groups: 5-7 and 8-10.
