Skyline High School Theatre presents `Hadestown’ May 2-4

Skyline High School is thrilled to announce its production of “Hadestown,” a captivating folk opera that will leave audiences spellbound. Sixty-two student actors, musicians, and technicians will take the stage from May 2-4 at Skyline.

This modern retelling of the ancient Greek myth explores two intertwining love stories: the youthful romance of Orpheus and Eurydice, and the eternal bond between King Hades and Lady Persephone. Set against the backdrop of 1930s Detroit at the dawn of the labor movement, Skyline’s version of “Hadestown” reimagines the classic tale through the lens of a pivotal moment in American history.

The production highlights the struggle between industry and nature, faith and doubt, and fear and love, all woven together with a soundtrack that draws from American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz. The set design pays homage to ancient Greek theatres while incorporating elements reminiscent of Detroit’s Packard Plant, creating a visually striking environment that enhances the storytelling.

“I felt it was crucial for the students to connect this story to a more local narrative,” said Anne-Marie Roberts, Director of Skyline Theatre. “When I initially presented the design concept, the students were very enthusiastic about exploring Detroit’s struggle to improve working conditions and the significance of the Packard plant.”
