356 Celebrated as Skyline’s 13th Graduating Class
Skyline High School celebrated the 356 graduates in the class of 2024 on Monday, June 3rd at the George Gervin GameAbove Center at Eastern Michigan University.
The Senior Class Message was shared by a familiar voice, Halle Woodard. She has read the morning announcement most mornings for the last three years. In Woodard’s final formal remarks to her classmates, she highlighted the unusual start of their high school experience during the COVID pandemic and how it compares to the unknown future they face as they leave Skyline.
Woodard said her classmates are like works of art made from clay that have be molded and changed, but still will continue to evolve. She wished that everyone in the class of 2024 will see in the mirror the beautiful works of art that they are. “In time you will grow into your work of art,” Woodard said. “Your pottery will get bigger, it will take on new shapes and it will change. Events in our lives will chip away at our piece, both adding and getting rid of parts to fit our current state. Life events can shatter it, build it back up, or change how it looks and feels entirely.”
The Class of 2024, led by Student Action Senate Senior Leaders Lucas Caswell, Brianna Ferguson, Emily Plum and Joshua Lee presented their class gift of decorative window covering screens to add to the beauty of Skyline.
Math teacher Nicholas Bertsos was selected by the graduates to give the commencement address. Bertsos joked that he met the class online and that they were all going through some stuff as they entered high school during online learning. He said eventually cameras started coming on and the chat started blowing up as students were looking for community, but not necessarily his math lessons.
With the option to skip out on classes and go back to bed, the Class of 2024 showing up proved how they respond to a challenge. “This class of graduates stared down crisis and reacted and to see you soaring out of Skyline tonight, to a bright, bright future makes my grinch heart grow a few sizes,” Bertsos said.
