Safety Town returns for another summer of interactive learning

More than 600 kids are participating in this 46-year-old tradition

It’s back!

Ann Arbor Public Schools’ Recreation & Education Department is once again offering Safety Town, a 46-year-old summer program that teaches young children essential safety skills through hands-on learning.

The program, designed for incoming Young 5, Kindergarten, and First Grade students who turn 5 by December 1, 2025, teaches students how to identify safe and unsafe situations they might encounter in their daily lives.

Throughout the one-week, half-day sessions, Safety Town participants meet and interact with police and fire department officials in a safe setting, so they will know how to interact with them in an emergency.

The interactive format allows the 600-plus children to practice safety awareness in an engaging environment that mirrors their own community. Through exploration of the miniature Ann Arbor setting, students develop skills for recognizing and responding to potentially dangerous situations.

Safety Town ranks among Rec & Ed’s most popular summer educational offerings. The program runs through July 25 at Wines Elementary School, and sessions are filled.
