Cameron Wiseman is easy to spot on the field hockey turf. Despite being only a sophomore and despite playing on a very talented team, the Skyline youngster is often the center of attention – she seems to be always around the ball and in the middle of the action.
She also combines a certain ease and grace with fierce determination. She never gives up on a play but also has the confidence and ability to size up the opposition and make the right play at the right time.
As a freshman, Wiseman had a team-high eight goals and 13 assists (29 points) in just 11 games and was named All-MHSFHA Division 1, and First Team All SEC. And she’s simply crushing it this year. In Skyline’s first seven games this season, she has an incredible 18 goals including three in a recent win over Huron. She also has two assists for 38 points.
Wiseman is feeling right at home at Skyline.
“Throughout middle school I was always very excited to play on Skyline’s team,” she says. “I played very well last year and we are off to a good start this season.”
And the Eagles have high expectations – the highest!
“Our team this year has a very good chance to be something special,” Wiseman says. “Our goal is to win the state championship.”
And so far, so good. The Eagles have won all their games outside of a tough loss to rival Pioneer early in the season. But the two shall meet again.
“Pioneer is definitely our team’s rival,” she says. “Losing to them was a tough game but Pioneer has always had an amazing program and coaches. Their team is very skilled and deep. And most of the players on their team play on my travel team with me so I love being able to play against them in a competitive game.”
The Eagles also are talented and deep and feature several outstanding players including Jessica Courtright, Skyline’s senior captain who has committed to Ohio State. “She is a great leader on our team and has really helped our program throughout her four years,” Wiseman says. “She has definitely taught me how to be helpful for my teammates and to have great communication with both my teammates and coaches.”
Wiseman started playing field hockey in third grade on a rec-ed team. “I had played on a travel ice hockey team, so field hockey to me was an outside version that I began to love playing,” she says.
In fifth grade, she joined the prestigious Pinnacle Field Hockey Club, coached by Nancy Cox (former Michigan head coach). Pinnacle plays year round and all over the country including Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and many more.
Cameron, 15, is the daughter of Brandee and Brian Wiseman. She excels in the classroom (4.0 GPA) and also plays lacrosse for Skyline. She also participates in DECA (business club) and the Wellness Wednesday Club at school.
But her passion and goals can be found in field hockey.
“My long-term goals are to definitely play in college,” she says. “Some schools I’d love to go to are Michigan, Ohio State, North Carolina, and Princeton.”
