Profile: Huron’s Taha Ebrahim heading to Alma to continue his baseball career

Taha Ebrahim started his baseball career in t-ball not realizing at the time he was teeing up a future built on perseverance, hard work and commitment to a sport that would help take him all the way to college.

“Yeah, I first started playing T-Ball and from there I just stayed with it and went into baseball,” says Ebrahim. “And from there I have loved the game ever since.”

And what sets baseball apart?

“One thing I like about baseball is that the game isn’t based off of time, but rather it’s based off of innings which always allows an opportunity for both teams,” he says.

In other words, you don’t run out of time, just opportunities – which has a nice bit of poetry to it.

Ebrahim was one of several outstanding players on last year’s Huron varsity baseball team and was very much looking forward to his senior year with the River Rats. Despite not getting that chance, his baseball career will continue at the next level.

The talented infielder and excellent student (3.5 GPA) plans to attend Alma College and play baseball.

“I don’t know exactly what I am going to be studying but I am most likely going to major somewhere in business,” he says. “I picked Alma because they gave me the opportunity to play baseball for another four years. I also really liked their class sizes and atmosphere of the school.”

Ebrahim played third base last year for the River Rats but also could play any position in the infield. He says he will end up at shortstop or second base at Alma.

His baseball career at Huron began on the freshman team, where he was one of the team’s top players. He admits it wasn’t easy playing freshman baseball when he felt like he had the skills to play at a higher level but he played hard and improved as a ninth-grader.

Ebrahim’s sophomore season began slowly. He was in a cast after breaking his hand but ended up having a solid season for the Huron JV team.

Last season, as a junior, Ebrahim played his first year on varsity and quickly moved up in both the batting order and impact on the field. He started the season batting seventh in the lineup and by the time Districts rolled around he was in the leadoff spot. Ebrahim led the SEC Red Division in league-play batting average with an average of .425. He  also earned All-Conference and All-District.

“One of my highlights/honors last season was being moved to leadoff for Districts,” he said. “I started the year in the seventh spot in the lineup and throughout the season I worked my way up. Before Districts I only hit leadoff once to fill in because our normal leadoff hitter wasn’t there. But I had shown that I had what it takes. And my first at-bat of Districts I ripped a line drive for a single.”

Ebrahim says he misses being around his teammates.

“I miss the team interactions, just being able to play and have fun with teammates I’ve been training with this whole off season,” he said. “I would have loved to be able to play another season with everyone.

“It’s been really tough since it was my senior season and this year I think our team was going to be one to reckon with. We had some of the most skill we have had in the Huron baseball program in years. One of my team goals was to win Districts this year since we have fallen short the last few years.”

Taha, the son of Pauline and Kadry Ebrahim, has been disappointed that he couldn’t play baseball this spring but hopes that everyone gets through these challenging times safely.

“I miss the interactions with friends and teachers or just people in general,” he says. “To keep busy I’ve been playing videogames, going outside with my siblings and hitting off my tee.”
