Lakewood Elementary celebrated the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month with its second annual Fiesta De Nuestra Cultura Y Comunidad, transforming the campus into a vibrant festival atmosphere. The school-wide event, held free of charge on the front lawn and parking lot, featured traditional dishes prepared and served by Lakewood Latino families, along with cultural dance performances, piñata activities, and hands-on crafts for families to enjoy together.

About 200 people attended the festival.

Principal Airess Stewart said that Lakewood embraces diversity and that last night’s event shows what community and belonging are all about.
“Our Latino families poured their hearts into creating an event to share their traditions and cultures of Hispanic heritage with everyone,” she said, adding that thanks go to the Lakewood Mama Advisory Group, Lakewood staff, the entire Lakewood community and the Pioneer Latino Student Union.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs through October 15 and will be celebrated in various ways throughout Ann Arbor Public Schools.
