Ann Arbor Public Schools students have once again sold an impressive home built over the course of a single school year. 399 Sedgewood Lane is under contract for $700,000. The five bedroom home features over 3800 square feet of finished living space, nine foot ceilings, oak hardwood floors, and a luxury primary suite with cathedral ceiling, spa shower bath and two walk in closets.
Several of the student builders were on site for the celebration open house to talk about their work. Caleb McCool graduated from Pioneer this spring. He says he knew it was possible for the house to turn out great based on seeing the one student’s built the year before, yet he was still amazed to see how this year’s house came together.
Grace Colone is a senior this fall at Community and will be back to work on her second home. Colone says her favorite part of the house is the fireplace and built-in bookshelves. She says the outcome of the house was based on a great crew. “We’re broken up in our classes into four teams and we work within our teams and together with multiple teams on bigger projects, and it was a really great experience to get to work with everyone in my class and to kind of form social connections as well as work relationships.”
Colone is definitely planning on going into the trades in some form after she graduates next spring. She’s just debating between an apprenticeship or going for a construction management degree. McCool has already entered the workforce, getting a job with Huron Contracting in Ann Arbor. He says he was determined to get a job in the trades after his experience last school year. “Luckily I had good contacts and I got a job out of it.”
While the homebuilders are celebrating the sale of last year’s house, planning work is already well underway for the home the program will build this year. Groundbreaking on the next house is expected during the first week of school.
