Eberwhite fourth grader has starring role in upcoming production of ‘Annie’

An Eberwhite fourth grader is about to take center stage—a place she’s felt comfortable since she was a toddler.

Ellen Gruber will star as Annie in The Encore Theater‘s upcoming production of the beloved musical Annie, which will run from December 5 through January 12 at 7714 Ann Arbor Street, Dexter.

What began as spontaneous singing at home—her parents, Bridget and Paul Gruber, say she’s been “singing her heart out” since age two—has blossomed into a serious pursuit of musical theater.

“We are so proud of her and can’t wait to see her shine on stage!” says her mother. “It’s been a delight to watch her find her passion and go for it.”

While Ellen has only been taking formal singing lessons for two years, she was inspired by Margaret Teall, an Eberwhite Elementary teacher who had previously taught Ellen’s older brother.

“Margaret is a perfect example of teachers going above and beyond,” Ellen’s mother explains. “She not only made an impact on my son but has inspired Ellen as well.”

Teall’s daughters, Slauson Middle School students Lila Teall Beaver and Charlotte Teall Beaver are also in the musical, playing orphans Duffy and Tessie.

Teall says she’s very proud of Ellen, and says she has lots of natural talent.

Other AAPS students in the production include Ann Arbor Open fifth grader Arianna Berlongieri and King fourth grader Azalea Wilkes-Krier, who play orphans.

Ellen says she was also inspired by her Eberwhite music teacher, Jeffrey Willets, who calls her “a terrific performer.”

“Ellen is a stellar student at Eberwhite, so musical and so very talented,” says Willets.  “But one would never know as she is also a very kind and humble young lady. That combination makes her a triple threat in my book.”
