Drone camp lets middle school students earn FAA TRUST Certificate

Last week, students participating in the Middle School Summer School program at Pioneer got the chance to learn and fly drones. The Our Place in Space: Drones for a Purpose camp was provided thanks to the Michigan NASA Space Grant Consortium and matching funds from the KLA Corporation.

At the camp, students coded and earned an FAA TRUST certificate, allowing them to fly drones, Then after mastering hover control, pitch, yaw and roll, campers then flew drones through an obstacle course relying on drone video first person view (FPV) or third person view to see where the drone was going.

The grant funding covered the week-long camp and three days of teacher training. The grant is part of the effort to close the STEM gap for females and underrepresented minorities.

“Drones purchased in the camp will be used in middle school PLTW classes across the district in upcoming years,” says Tom Pachera, AAPS Career, Technology and Education (CTE) and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Director. “We are hopeful the entire program leads to a district wide CTE aviation program.”
