King Elementary School was the site of the Ann Arbor Public Schools English Learner Department’s Back to School Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 14. The event drew 121 families, representing a diverse group of 300 people eager to start the new academic year on the right foot.
Newcomers to the district mingled with returning families, all united in their quest for information and resources.
The fair offered an array of services. Families enrolled their children for the upcoming year, while others gathered details about the district’s programs. School supplies and backpacks were distributed free of charge, and one popular feature was the all-you-can-eat pizza lunch provided by Chartwells Schools Dining Services. Families filled the King cafeteria to share meals and conversations, fostering a sense of community.

Teachers and administrators, including Superintendent Jazz Parks, were on hand to meet and greet families. Appreciate parents said they gained a clearer understanding of school schedules and procedures. Several said their children are now more comfortable with the idea of returning to school or starting their first day of kindergarten.
Huda Harajli, the district’s Director of English Learner Programs, said the two-hour event was a big success.
“Our goal was to ensure every family feels welcomed and supported as they begin the new school year,” she said. “We are thrilled with the turnout and the sense of community built today. “We’re especially grateful for the AAPS EL staff who helped organize and lead the event. Seeing the smiles on the faces of both students and caregivers reassures us that we’re on the right path.”
