A blast from the past: 1999 time capsule opened at Pattengill assembly

From a back shelf to center stage, this all-school assembly was 26 years in the making.

Pattengill librarian Marlana Evans found a forgotten 1999 time capsule tucked away on a back shelf in the library four years ago. When a former student reached out in December asking if they’d ever opened it, staff realized there was a special piece of Pattengill history waiting to be unveiled.

Principal Valeska Bass opened the 26-year-old time capsule during an all-school assembly on Monday. Inside were treasures from 1999: a black and white school yearbook, letters from students, and other artifacts that gave students a window into what school life was like back then.

Later, it was discovered that the yearbook included a class photo with Kelly Cheladyn, who is a current Pattengill third grade teacher.

Bass hopes the event encourages students to create their own time capsules.

“I hope the kids will take away from this experience the fact that they can always teach someone about their culture or the time that they live in in various ways,” she said, “and a time capsule is a really cool way for them to let the world know some of the things that they like, what was popular, and how people live in 2025 if they choose to use this year.”
