Extended School Year (ESY) Program helps students in special education retain skills over the summer

This summer, Abbot Elementary is the setting for AAPS’ Office of Special Education’s  Extended School Year (ESY) program, serving 73 students from preschool through 12th grade.

ESYis  reserved for students with Individualized Education Programs who meet a strict set of qualifying criteria, and every offering is rooted in special education.

The goal is simple: keep the skills students worked hard to build during the school year from sliding over the summer, says Jerron Bryant, elementary compliance coordinator for Ann Arbor Public Schools, who’s stepping into the role of ESY principal this summer.

For five weeks July 31,  the program runs Monday through Thursday, with students on-site from 9 a.m. to noon and staff arriving early and staying late, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Classes stay small and focused, with six to 12 students each. to 12 students.
