Pioneer senior Abby Hood honored for leadership, service, and character

She’s been chosen as Pioneer High School’s DAR Good Citizen and the Sarah Caswell Angell Chapter’s overall winner

At Pioneer High School, Abby Hood is the kind of student whose impact is felt as much in quiet moments as in visible achievements.

Chosen as Pioneer’s 2025-26 DAR Good Citizen and the Sarah Caswell Angell Chapter’s overall Good Citizen winner, Abby was nominated by her teacher, Lisabeth Mikolajczyk, for the qualities she shows every day: leadership, service, and strong character.

Pioneer is one of six area high schools (the only one from AAPS) to particpate in the award.

A committed student-athlete, Abby has spent four years competing in varsity cross country and track and field and now serves as a cross country team captain. Her leadership extends well beyond athletics. She’s active in the National Honor Society and the Purple Track Club, and she balances multiple leadership roles—president of the French Club, treasurer of Craft & Connect, and head of the Women’s Board for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Club.

Service has been a constant in Abby’s life. She has volunteered more than 80 hours throughout the community, including at the Humane Society of Huron Valley, worked as a summer camp counselor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, and holds a part-time job at Rosa’s Squeeze Inn as a dishwasher and hostess.

“I have tried to use service to make a meaningful impact beyond myself,” she said.

That steady commitment stood out to Kristyna Rabassa, a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State, who praised Abby’s character and values.
“Abby embodies a quiet but true love for her country,” Rabassa said. “Her patriotism is not performative, but rather is grounded in an unselfish commitment to family, school, community, and the enduring ideals of the United States.”

This fall, Abby plans to attend a four-year university to study political science and law, with hopes of becoming a human resources attorney—continuing a path shaped by service and leadership.
