Voices and vision: Pioneer High School celebrates Black History Month with talent-filled assembly

Pioneer High School’s Black History Month Assembly brought students and staff together on Wednesday for an afternoon of performance, history, and reflection.

Hosted by students LeTia and Tisa, the program traced decades of Black American history, with student “reporters” Mia, Hevvon, Valentina, Seven, and Maya providing historical context for each era from the 1920s through today. The assembly’s theme, “The Next One Hundred,” referred to historian/author/educator Carter G. Woodson’s creation of Negro History Week in 1926.

Performances were woven throughout, and each was met with enthusiastic applause. Jayla opened with Lift Every Voice and Sing, and Masimba performed original poetry—twice, in fact, also joining Randy for Express Yourself. Pioneer’s Concert Purple Orchestra performed Danzan, and Turo played Clair de Lune. GG sang God Bless the Child, and Vea performed And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.

One of the standout moments came when Principal Desmond Smith joined student Zoey for a drumming duet—a highlight that set the tone for just how all-in the whole school community was for this event.

Smith’s Administrative Assistant, Deborah Anglin, also delivered a powerful performance in a duet of We Shall Overcome with student Maddy.

The assembly lasted about 45 minutes and was held twice, so every student could attend.

Thanks to all who made this joyful celebration possible!
