Slauson students on Wednesday got the opportunity to have a chipotle lime chicken and brown rice bowl and Gatorade Zero as part of the special lunch. They also had the opportunity to meet University of Michigan gymnast Reyna Guggino who is currently working on her Masters in Movement Science and a Physical Activity and Nutrition certificate.
Guggino has been a gymnast since she was six years old, but admits that for most of the time she was competing she wasn’t necessarily eating in a way that would lead to maximizing her performance. “I didn’t really know much about fueling and how to properly fuel until I got to college,” Guggino said. “When I met with our team’s dietician I was able to hone in on what I like to eat, when to eat, really tailoring it to me.”
Guggino hopes her visit to Slauson and Chartwell’s emphasis on nutrition helps students focus on what they are eating. “The most important thing being that it’s important for how you fuel yourself, before, during and after any athletic performance,” she said.

The chipotle lime chicken and brown rice bowl was special for the event, but it was similar to other items Chartwells has available for AAPS students on a regular basis. “I think it’s a great thing, it has all the nutrients, proteins and carbs and everything an athlete or any student needs,” Guggino said. The bowl was well received by students and students may start eating it at home as well. “We were handing out the recipe card and a lot of them took it, and hopefully a lot of them either make it themselves or ask their parents to please make it for me.”
In addition to the focus on nutrition, Guggino answered student questions about how long she has done gymnastics, how much time she practices a day and her favorite event.
