Mood Boost is part of Chartwells K-12’s broader initiative to promote nutrition education

Bach Elementary School’s multi-purpose room transformed into an interactive nutrition experience today as Chartwells K-12 hosted a Mood Boost event designed to teach students how different foods can affect their emotions and well-being.
The afternoon event invited students from all grades to explore six stations, each featuring a different “mood boost character” and corresponding foods scientifically proven to influence that particular mood. As students moved through the stations, they collected stickers marking their progress and learned valuable lessons about nutrition’s role in how they feel.
Sandra Short, marketing director for Chartwells, said the goal of Mood Boost is to help students connect nutrition with how they feel and perform. By highlighting foods that support strength, focus, and alertness, she hopes students leave with a better understanding of how what they eat can positively impact their mood and overall well-being.

“We talk about what makes them strong, and what helps them feel smart and alert,” she said. “Each food category supports the body in a different way. If they leave knowing that what they put into their bodies can help them become stronger, smarter, or more focused, then we’ve done our job.”
At the “Strong” station, students sampled broccoli, cherry tomatoes, and carrots. The “Confident” table offered guacamole and tortilla chips, while the “Happy” station featured a marinated tomato and cucumber salad. Students seeking to feel more alert tried raspberries with chocolate, and those interested in boosting their brainpower sampled hummus at the “Smart” station. The “Calm” table rounded out the experience with popcorn.
Chartwells K-12 designed the menu to accommodate dietary restrictions, with five of the six stations featuring allergen-free options.
The event drew support from the community, including parents working in the field of nutrition and local college students volunteering their time. These volunteers helped serve food, shared nutritional knowledge with curious students, and distributed prizes throughout the afternoon.

After completing all six stations, each student received the chance to spin a prize wheel for additional rewards. Every participant left with a goodie bag, and some sat on the floor trading nutritious treats and toys.
The Mood Boost event is part of Chartwells K-12’s broader initiative to promote nutrition education in local schools. The company has additional events planned for February, including a Vegetarian Station at Tappan Middle School on February 20th and a Power Up athletic performance event at Slauson Middle School on February 25th.
