The Ann Arbor Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People recognized 236 Ann Arbor Public Schools high school students at their annual Freedom Fund Dinner. The students were recognized for maintaining a 3.2 grade point average or above during the 2024-25 school year.
The theme of this year’s Freedom Fund Dinner was “The Fierce Urgency of Now” with a focus on celebrating Black excellence. Skyline’s Kwesi-Nana Kwakye shared that Black excellence is not just celebrating individual achievement, but succeeding with your village. Huron’s Kinley Poole highlighted that Black excellence is about regular people doing hard things, not just famous Black celebrities. He said, “Black excellence is not about being perfect, it’s about showing up even when things get hard. It’s about carrying the legacy of those who came before us and paving the way for those who will come after us.”
