Diploma and Career-related Programme candidates work together at the Freeman Environmental Education Center

We’re proud of the 144 Huron High School IB Diploma and Career-related Program candidates who rolled up their sleeves and made a real difference at Freeman Environmental Education Center during Huron’s 2025 Day of Service.
The students planted native grass, flower, and shrub seedlings grown in the Freeman nursery, helped prepare a new stormwater detention basin/rain garden, expanded prairie restoration plots, and maintained the trails. They also did some weeding and mulching to care for tree saplings that Huron students helped plant during fall service events from prior years.
“We want students to see how their hands-on work makes a real impact,” said Carrie James, Huron’s interim IB 11th and 12th Grade Facilitator. “The Day of Service gives them a chance to connect learning with action and see themselves as contributors to their community.”
Coert Ambrosino, the district’s Environmental Education Lead Teacher, said that having Huron students at Freeman for the Day of Service is becoming quite a meaningful and fun fall tradition.
“It’s wonderful to see so many students outside working together and learning new skills,” he said. “We appreciate all of the people power this group contributes to ongoing habitat enhancement and campus improvement projects at Freeman.”
