Freda Shatara, Abbot Elementary first grade teacher

Freda Shatara grew up in a home in Livonia where learning was always encouraged and celebrated. Reading played a central role in her childhood—her mother read to her daily, and before long, she was eagerly reading on her own whenever she could. That early love of reading has stayed with her and remains one of her favorite ways to spend her free time. Outside of reading, Shatara enjoys spending time with friends and family, attending sporting events (“Go Bills!” she says), and staying active.

Shatara earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, where she majored in Early Childhood Education and Mathematics. While teaching second grade, she completed a Master’s degree in Bilingual Bicultural Education at Wayne State University. Most recently, in August, she earned a second Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Principal Stephan Hogan says Shatara truly loves her students, and they know it.
“Every child feels seen and cared for in her classroom, and that care extends far beyond the school year.,” he says. “She makes a point of checking in with former students daily and regularly reconnects with families from this year and years past. She is always willing to step in and support her colleagues and is constantly looking for creative ways to support both the academic and personal growth of her students. She is truly beyond exceptional.”

What inspired you to become a first grade teacher, and what keeps you motivated each day?
My first-grade teacher is really the reason I wanted to become a teacher. We built such a special relationship that lasted for years, and it showed me how powerful those connections can be. What motivates me every day are my students. I love getting to know them and their families, and creating a classroom where they feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. Seeing them grow and feel proud of themselves is what makes it all worthwhile.

How do you create a classroom environment where every six-year-old is excited to learn?
For me, it’s all about relationships – it really is that simple. When kids know you truly care about them and believe in them, they come to school ready to learn and want to be the best version of themselves. I set high expectations, but I also make sure every child knows they can do hard things and they always rise to the challenge!

What’s the most rewarding moment you’ve experienced with a student recently?
One of the most rewarding moments for me recently was listening to my students talk about a book we were reading. I honestly found myself just sitting back in awe of their conversation. They were asking each other thoughtful questions and making connections on their own – not just to books we’ve read this year, but even to stories they remembered from kindergarten. Hearing them build off one another’s ideas and take such ownership of the discussion was such a powerful reminder of how much they’ve grown and how meaningful these learning moments can be.

What do you like most about teaching at Abbot?
What I like most about teaching at Abbot is the incredible sense of community. Abbot is truly my favorite place. There’s something special about our building that you can feel as soon as you walk in. The staff here genuinely has each other’s backs; everyone is always willing to help one another, no matter what. We share the same commitment to our students, and that care really shows in everything we do.

But what makes Abbot truly special are the kids. They bring so much joy, energy, and heart into our school every single day. I love getting to know each of them, learning about their personalities and interests, and being a part of their journey as they grow and discover what they’re capable of. It’s such a supportive and positive environment, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it. I can walk through the halls and see students I have taught over the year,s and our interactions are always extremely special to me.

How do you spend your summers?
I love being able to travel in the summer. I typically spend time in San Diego, my favorite place. I love nothing more than trips to the beach, reading in the sun, and spending time with my family! Next summer, I plan to go to Jordan, London, and possibly Spain or Turkey!
