Strong community turnout at AAPS Back to School English Learner Fair

514 people representing 165 families attended the festive 2nd annual event

Ann Arbor Public Schools’ Second Annual Back-to-School English Learner Fair drew impressive attendance on Friday, with 165 families and 514 total attendees participating across two sessions.

The event, designed to welcome English learner families to the district, featured two sessions—morning and evening—providing district information, enrollment support, student success tips, school supplies, and lunch for participating families. It was held at King Elementary School.

“What an amazing start to the school year!” said Huda Harajli, Director of English Learner Programs. “With 514 people joining us for our AAPS Back to School EL Fair, it’s clear that we have an incredible community spirit here. This event perfectly captured our commitment to welcoming every family and staying connected throughout the year ahead.”

The fair provided an opportunity for families to connect with the English Learner community while showcasing the district’s commitment to supporting all students and their families as they begin the new school year.

AAPS is one of the most linguistically diverse districts in the state, with dozens of languages spoken by our families and students. About 1,800 English learners are enrolled in AAPS English Learner Programs.

English learners are essential to the very fabric of the district, said Superintendent Jazz Parks.

“They contribute to the richness and the experience that we want all students to have here in Ann Arbor Public Schools,” she said. “So I couldn’t be prouder of the work that the team has put together to have this English Learner Fair for our families.”
