Two minutes at: Community High School

Editor’s Note: This is one in a series of two-minute videos offering a quick glimpse into one of AAPS’ 32 schools. At AAPS, our vision is Every Child. Every Day. Every one fully sees, values, and celebrates each child for exactly who they are, the gifts and strengths they bring to this world.

Community High School, with a student population of 510, is one of the oldest public magnet schools in the country.

Several things make the school unique. Admission is by lottery. Every student becomes part of a forum, which is a student-centered, student-run group that serves as a kind of family. Community Resource (C.R.) classes allow students to come up with their own for-credit programs that allow them to get out in the community while they develop practical skills. An open campus as well as block scheduling and no bells at the start of end of classes create a college-like environment and encourse self-initiated learning opportunities.

Community opened in 1972. Its mission is: CHS is a rigorous academic college preparatory magnet school that encourages students to use the entire community as a resource for study and fosters the development of independent learners who practice personal and social responsibility as they prepare for their post-secondary experience.
