Calder Westerman made a tuxedo entirely out of duct tape that he hopes will help pay for his college education

Calder Westerman has crafted an intricate tuxedo entirely out of duct tape that could transform from a racing suit into formal wear—and he’s hoping his design will help pay for his college education.
The 2025 Pioneer High School graduate has been named one of five national finalists in the Duck Brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest, earning him a shot at a $15,000 college scholarship. The achievement represents the culmination of over 85 hours of meticulous work and reflects both his passion for motorsports and his future academic plans.

Calder’s transformative tuxedo design is a nod to his love of racing and perfectly aligns with his goals — this fall, he’ll be studying Automotive Engineering Technology at Ferris State University.
“I worked very hard on my suit to represent my passion and drive to go above and beyond in automotive, my excitement for attending Ferris, and my hope to win this scholarship to kick start my future,” says Calder. “I’d be extraordinarily grateful if any of you can send in a vote to help my dreams come true.”

What makes Calder’s achievement even more remarkable is the family tradition he’s continuing. His older brother, Vaughn, was also a finalist in the same contest back in 2021, making the Westerman household no stranger to Duck Tape artistry and national recognition. Vaughn recently graduated with honors from Michigan Tech with a degree in Computer Science.
“Vaughn didn’t win the grand prize, so we’re hoping Calder can take it to the finish line,” says their mother, Amber Westerman. “I’m so proud to have both my sons chosen as finalists when they entered. Ann Arbor Schools really fostered such independence and creativity!”
