Editor’s note: Five AAPS high school seniors were recently named “Young Men of Promise” by the Delta Psi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
The students were recognized during the chapter’s annual Celebration of Black Men Brunch which honors local African American men who have given back to the community through service in the arts, business/economics, community service, education, health and as a trailblazer.
The goal of the Celebration of Black Men is to applaud these unsung heroes who have made a significant and/or unique contribution to our black community, explained Delta Psi Omega member Patricia Manley, an AAPS School Board trustee, who oversees the Young Men of Promise program.
The full list of honorees includes:
- Community High School – Quincy David Jenkins
- Huron High School – Abdul Kizito
- Pathways to Success Academic Campus – LeMarcus (Marty) Roper
- Pioneer High School – Gabriel C. Nwogu
- Skyline High School – Ryan Anthony Wade
- Lincoln Consolidated High School – William McDonald
- Ypsilanti Community High School – Emerson Williams
Quincy Jenkins
According to Community High School counselor Brian Williams, nominating Quincy Jenkins as a Young Man of Promise was a no-brainer. He says Quincy is an outstanding student who continues to take full advantage of the rigor that the Ann Arbor Schools while maintaining a 3.7 GPA.
“He carries himself with a calm confidence and an infectious smile,” Williams noted. “Academically, he’s an all-star.”
Williams said Quincy is a motivated young man who started his own business in 2010. He has spent the last several summers volunteering for a variety of Sports Camps through the Ann Arbor Rec and Ed programs and has been a member of the Pioneer High school basketball team as a player and team manager. Quincy’s coach told Williams that Quincy would do anything for anybody, and was willing to step into any role.
Quincy has been an active member of the Black Student Union at Community High School throughout his high school career and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is currently applying to several colleges/universities around the country, including College of Wooster, Denison, Kalamazoo College, and the University of Michigan.
