Strive for a Safer Drive, a program jointly supported by Ford Driving Skills for Life and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, provides funding and resources to help teens talk to teens about safe driving with the goal of reducing traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities. At the conclusion of the annual campaign, top schools are selected based on creativity, execution and compliance with the “Strive for a Safer Drive” participation requirements.

Skyline won 4th place in the State of Michigan for its student-led campaign to promote roundabout safety, and increase awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and speeding.

Their campaign included a simulated driving experience for students, interactive educational activities during the SkyWell Wellness Expo and other school events, a social media and bulletin board campaign, and a student pledge to drive safely. To date, over 500 individuals have taken the pledge. New speed limit signage will be installed on the Skyline campus using campaign funds. A video public service announcement was created to inform students about the pledge.

According to the Office of Highway Safety Planning, 50 high schools participated this year. Clarkston High School took first place for a campaign called “You Can Be Impacted When Distracted.” Lamphere High School in Madison Heights placed second. Lakewood High School in Barry County earned third place; and Carlson High School in Wayne County finished fifth. Each school won a cash prize in an amount of $500 – $1,500.

“We appreciate Ford Driving Skills for Life and the S4SD Program for their support as we address the important issues related to teen driving injuries and fatalities,” said Kristin Mahler, RN, MPH, School Nurse at Skyline and SkyWell adviser. “We are looking forward to continued support of the DRIVE Well campaign and to expanding the program to other high schools in the district.”

SkyWell plans to reach out to Ann Arbor high schools before the 2018 campaign period begins next fall.
