Pioneer students win Kerrytown Bookfest design contest

Design by Mediah Austin

Five Pioneer High School students were selected as finalists in the Kerrytown Bookfest design competition Sept. 9.

Mediah Austin, Megan Childs, Maggie Lemak, Jiaming Shen and Desiree Robinson were selected from a pool of 50 other students who submitted a design of the book cover of “Frames” by bestselling author and Whitmore Lake resident Loren D. Estleman.

The students are in Crystal Westfield’s art and design classes at Pioneer. Her students have participated in the contest for the last five years as part of their class final.

“This past year all of the entries were from (Westfield’s) students at Pioneer, and they were outstanding,” said Robin Agnew, president of the Kerrytown Bookfest.

The judges of this year’s contest were Estleman; Huron River Press publisher Steve Klein and Darcy Bowden, artist and retired art teacher.

Westfield often encourages her students to submit work to design contests or collaborative art projects. During the last school year, Westfield’s students submitted pieces to a mosaic of Fela Kuti that is on display at the Charles H. Wright museum of African American History in Detroit.
