From here on out, all girls who play softball for Huron High School will represent outgoing Athletic Director Dottie Davis—and that’s quite a legacy to live up to.
So said Coach Waleed Samaha at Monday’s dedication ceremony unveiling the newly named Dottie D. Davis Softball Field. (More background here.)
Describing Davis as collaborative, cooperative, much-loved, and supportive, Principal Janet Schwamb called Davis “the consummate River Rat.“
“If she’s not wearing a River Rat outfit, she’s probably ill,” she joked.
Thanking her family and the many coaches and other supporters who came out to the field on a sunny Monday afternoon, Davis said the reason she has done everything she’s done at Huron for all these years is to pay it forward for the kids.
“It’s just amazing to me that this day has come, and I’m just very humbled and I’m very appreciative of what everyone has done,” said Davis, who is set to retire after serving Huron High School since 1981. “As you all know, you can’t do it all yourself. It takes everyone to help you every step of the way. Always remember that. I can look out here and see this huge safety net, and I just thank you.”
