Today the Ann Arbor Public Schools voters have spoken. Because the annexation vote did not pass in Ann Arbor, the annexation of Whitmore Lake Public Schools into the Ann Arbor Public Schools will not occur.
In the Ann Arbor Public Schools community, we will continue to partner with our neighbors to the north to work collaboratively in facing our persistent challenges with inadequate school funding from the state. Working together as a team with other districts in the Washtenaw Intermediate School District and across Michigan, our focus must remain on ensuring a quality education for all our students. We have much work to accomplish on behalf of all the students in this district.
We want to thank members of both Boards of Education for working so hard toward an innovative solution to address the statewide crisis in under-funding of public education. It was a privilege to work with the Whitmore Lake community as they grappled with the challenge of maintaining and improving educational opportunities for their students.
We will continue our work to extend and enhance the quality for which Ann Arbor Public Schools has long been widely known, across the state and around the world. We will continue to innovate, and we will grow our way forward.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve the children, families, and staff of the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
Deb Mexicotte, President, Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education
Jeanice Kerr Swift, Superintendent of Schools, Ann Arbor Public Schools
