Dr. George Shirley & Carpenter Student
On Friday, September 26, 2014,  History Maker Dr. George Shirley visited Carpenter Elementary School to share the importance of getting a good education, asking children to listen to the adults in their lives and what it means to give your body
“good brain food”.
Carpenter was the only Ann Arbor school to participate in the 5th History Maker assembly on Friday with over 600 schools across the country.
Dr. George Shirley is a world renowned singer with many “firsts” under his belt that include: Being the first black teacher in the
Detroit public schools, first African American tenor to have a contract with the MET and the first African American to sing with the military chorus.
If you are able to visit the Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit, you will see Dr. Shirley’s name engraved on the walls of those we salute. After the assembly, Dr. Shirley went to several classrooms were he talked about the History Makers Commitment Pledge. Please visit www.historymakers.com for more information.
