Free e-waste event hosted this week at Pioneer and WISD

A free e-waste recycling event is being hosted this week by The Ann Arbor Public Schools in conjunction with the Office of Campus Sustainability at the University of Michigan.

This year’s event celebrates the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22.  Started 4 years ago with the recycling of Apple computers, it is designed to help area residents, small businesses and nonprofits recycle electronics in an Earth-friendly way.

Recycling days will be:

For local businesses and nonprofit organizations: 9 a.m. -2 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 22 and 23, Washtenaw Intermediate School District, 1819 S. Wagner Road. Pre-registration is requested to ensure adequate staffing, but is not required.

For the general public: 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 24, Pioneer High School. Enter from Main Street, at the corner of W. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor.

E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the country and frequently contains hazardous materials such as lead and mercury, which can adversely affect the environment. The free disposal event is for everything from laptops and desktop computer to televisions and telephones and helps to keep these items out of landfills. It also recaptures raw materials that can be reused to manufacture new items.

During the 2009 event, 21 semi-trailers were filled with 262 tons of hazardous e-waste. All equipment is destroyed and recycled in an environmentally sound manner by a fully permitted recycling facility.
