Does your daughter still have her prom dress from 2013 in the back of the closet?
Or does she still need to buy a dress for this year’s dance?
The Huron High School PTSO has an idea for you.
The third annual Prom Dress Project will offer gently used prom dresses for just $10 on Sunday, March 8 from noon to 3 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center Atrium in Ypsilanti.
The event is open to everyone, regardless of financial need.
Jan Wery, an Ann Arbor Thrift Shop employee and volunteer with the Bride’s Project contacted Huron PTSO member, Michelle Armbruster, to expand the prom dress project, which had fewer customers the past two years than Werdy would have liked.
Wery said she got the idea while volunteering at the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop, and saw so many donations of beautiful prom dresses that simply weren’t seen by the high school girls who would be in the market for them.
She said a University of Michigan sorority donated about 25 short dresses that had just been dry-cleaned. Right now, there are about 150 dresses ready to be sold for $10, and she’d like to get another 100 in before March 8 so the girls will have a nice selection.
“They’re just beautiful dresses, and it makes so much sense to buy them used because they look brand new after I wash them,” she said. “I want it to be a community project the girls can count on every year, with girls donating their dresses for another girl.”
Werdy is happy that this year, the event is held together with a Huron PTSO fundraiser. The dress sale will be going on at the same location as the Destination Graduation Expo, which will assist parents with their selection of vendors for at home graduation parties.
There is an admittance charge for the expo, but not for the Prom Dress Project.
“It’s best if the PTSO is sponsoring it because moms know about those dresses hanging in the back of the closet, and that there are lots of other expenses that go along with a prom,” said Wery.
Some expenses associated with the prom cannot be modified, but finding a beautiful dress for $10.00 is possible with this project, said Armbruster.
“Being able to donate a beautiful dress that will be enjoyed again is a feel-good opportunity,” she said.
Dress donations may be dropped off at the 12th grade office at Huron or the main office at Pioneer or Skyline.
