In a Special Meeting of the Board of Education on February, 12, 2020, the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education voted to approve the selection of Glenn L. Nelson to serve out the remainder of the term left vacant due to the resignation of Harmony Mitchell in January. The term will end on December 31, 2020.
Glenn Nelson previously served for 12-and-a-half years on the Board of Education, 2002 – 2014, where he held the position of Treasurer during most years as well as served on the 2004 Bond Oversight Committee. He has a background in economics and is well versed in public finance. These skills, in addition to his experience in overseeing the 2004 Bond and working on numerous bonds and millages, will serve the Board well as one of the important tasks of 2020 is to lay the foundation for transparent, effective implementation of the 2019 Bond.
Since leaving Board service, Mr. Nelson has continued with volunteer efforts to serve the Ann Arbor Public Schools as well as the greater Ann Arbor community. He is a founding member of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Arab American Parent Group and a member of the Ann Arbor Citizen’s Millage Committee. In addition, he is a founding member of the Citizens for Mental Health & Public Safety as well as a member of the Recreation Advisory Commission.
Board President, Bryan Johnson said, “The board is delighted to welcome Trustee Nelson onto our team. He’s so well respected in the community and I had the honor to work with him during capital bond canvassing. I truly believe he will be a perfect compliment to our current team and will serve the children of AAPS well this year.”
Mr. Nelson states: “I am honored to be selected to join the Board of Education. We in Ann Arbor are fortunate to have Trustees with diverse backgrounds and an excellent administrative team. Some trustees bring years of experience that inform decisions while others bring the fresh perspective of relative newcomers. We have the right mix for making informed, good decisions. I look forward to being a member of this team.”
Glenn Nelson and his wife, Margaret Dewar, have lived in Ann Arbor for more than 30 years and their son and daughter attended the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Mr. Nelson was selected from a pool of seven applicants, and the Board would like to thank each candidate for their interest in serving on the Board of Education.
