The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education will continue with the same leadership team as was in place in 2015. At their organizational meeting, Deb Mexicotte was elected to serve her seventh year as President. Vice President Christine Stead, Secretary Andy Thomas, and Treasurer Donna Lasinski were also chosen to continue to serve in their roles.

Mexicotte says it’s not too surprising there weren’t changes. “Because we do not have new board members at the organizational meeting on the off year, and so there is I think less impetus to change positions,” she says. “Unless the board changes and unless there is a compelling need to do so, leadership stability is important to the continuation of our governance structure, continuation of our efforts and initiatives in conjunction with administration. I think it also speaks to the fact that this board functions very well as a team.”

There will be some changes coming to the board next year. Before the election of officers, Trustee Andy Thomas announced he would not seek re-election and his term ends at the end of the year. Thomas wanted to make sure fellow board members knew this before they voted on leadership positions.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to encourage members of the public who are committed and dedicated to public education and who would be willing to give 10 to 15 hours a week for no pay to sit on the board of education to consider running,” Thomas said. He hopes his early announcement will give everyone in the community plenty of time to consider the process, get petitions signed, and all other things involved with running for public office.
