The Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education celebrated the district’s existing Environmental Education program and looked forward to the possibilities of expanding the program at the Freeman Environmental Education Center. The school board held a ribbon cutting at the Freeman site on October 17th before holding a study session.
The study session included hearing from a group of AP Environmental Science students from Skyline High School. Students from Pioneer and Skyline studied the biodiversity of wooded portions of the Freeman property and found even greater diversity in terms of plants, animals, and insects than expected.
Work of a pair of advisory committees focused on environmental issues was also discussed at the study session. The first group is focused specifically on the future of the Freeman Environmental Education Center. This group is currently looking at exemplars of environmental education centers.
The second advisory group that was discussed is focused on overall environmental and sustainability efforts across the district.
