Area students will take the stage to inspire & motivate during NAAPID at Night Monday, Feb. 12 at EMU

An inspiring message and an array of student talent are on tap for the annual NAAPID at Night event to be held starting at 6 p.m. at the Eastern Michigan University Student Center, 900 Oakwood Street, Ypsilanti.

State Representative Sherry Gay-Dagnogo will address the NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day) theme: “It takes a partnership of parents, schools, and community to fully educate our children.”  She represents Michigan’s 8th district and is a former Detroit Public Schools teacher.

In addition to Gay-Dagnogo’s keynote address, students from Ann Arbor Public Schools, Lincoln Consolidated Schools, and Ypsilanti Community Schools will take the stage to sing, recite poetry, perform gymnastics, and play instruments. There will also be an acknowledgment of the poster contest winners. Shoshana DeMaria, chair of the evening event, says the annual affair provides inspiration and motivation.

This poster created by Clague Middle School sixth grader Dominick Franklin was one of the finalists in the NAAPID at Night Poster Contest.

“It is always refreshing to accentuate the positive attributes of our young people and the annual showcase of talent does just that and more,” DeMaria said. “Anytime we can come together and celebrate the success of our students, hear an uplifting message from a legislative leader, and fellowship as a community, is a worthwhile venture.”

National African American Parent Involvement Day was founded in 1995 by the late AAPS educator Joseph Dulin. His vision was to mobilize parents to engage in the education of their children to address the serious academic deficit.

The event will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. with light refreshments provided by EMU. The Ypsilanti Youth Orchestra Jazz Ensemble will perform during the reception. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, go to naapidatnight.com
