Members of the Allen Elementary community took on a new challenge this year. For the first time, they participated in the Trex “Beyond the Bag” national recycling challenge.
In the process, students saved 306 pounds of plastic from going into a landfill—enough to earn them 16th place of the 700 schools that participated across the country.
“Our drop off point was in the hallway near our great room – so kids passed by it every day,” explained Kit Flynn, Allen’s interim principal. “Teachers regularly sent kids down to drop off items from the classrooms, and parents contributed their plastic recycling as well. We were thrilled to hear that we collected over 300 pounds of plastics that can be used in Trex products. We were so surprised to learn we came in at 16th place out of 700! We think we can win first prize if we work a little harder.”
Every year hundreds of schools across the nation compete against each other to recycle the most plastic film. In addition to providing a better understanding and appreciation for the importance of recycling, Trex will happily donate a high-performance composite bench to the winning school, and bestow honorary awards to every school that participates.
The winners were announced on Earth Day.
