AAPS Welcomes Two New Assistant Principals

Dr. Jeanice Swift, Superintendent for The Ann Arbor Public Schools, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Angela Newing as the new assistant principal of Forsythe Middle School and Mr. Christopher Roberts as the new assistant principal at Tappan Middle School.

In addition to teaching mathematics for over 20 years in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, Ms. Newing has served as the Ann Arbor Public Schools District Mathematics Department Chair for grades 6 – 12 since 2011 as well as Forsythe’s Mathematics Curriculum Leader from 1998 – 2013. Along with her teaching and administrative duties, Ms. Newing has also worked with the University of Michigan’s Center for Engineering Diversity and Outreach as a Curriculum Coordinator and mathematics instructor.

“Ms. Newing has served as a dedicated mathematics teacher at Forsythe since 1994 as well as amassed a broad range of knowledge as a curriculum leader and administrator along the way,” said Dr. Swift. “We are fortunate that she has decided to bring her considerable skills to this leadership position.”

Ms. Newing has served as a mentor teacher as well as designed and presented programs for teacher training for the U.S. and Michigan Departments of Education. In 2004, she received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.

Ms. Newing holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts in Secondary School Teaching, a Secondary Certificate in Mathematics and Computer Science and an Elementary and Secondary Administrator Certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She also participated in the Washtenaw County Aspiring Principals Academy.

Tappan Middle School – Mr. Christopher Roberts

Mr. Christopher Roberts has accepted the position of Assistant Principal of Tappan Middle School. Mr. Roberts is joining the Ann Arbor Public Schools from the Lincoln Consolidated Schools where he most recently served as a middle school principal. He also served as the assistant principal in the Lincoln district as well as an elementary school assistant principal. Prior to moving into administration, Mr. Roberts spent eight years as a middle school Social Studies and Language Arts teacher.

“Mr. Christopher Roberts is an experienced and knowledgeable middle school administrator,” said Dr. Swift. “We are delighted that he is joining the Ann Arbor Public Schools administrative team and Tappan Middle School.”

Mr. Roberts has spent virtually his entire educational career at the middle school level and is well versed in building respectful relationships with students and parents that translates into a positive school climate for all. He also recognizes the importance of academic achievement and has a record of implementing programs and protocols that have resulted in improved student achievement as measured by state standardized tests.

Mr. Roberts holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Siena Heights University and  a Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University where he is also pursuing a Specialists degree in Educational Leadership
