Ann Arbor Public Schools celebrated renovations and enhancements made in Allen Elementary School after the August 2016 flood with a Dedication Ceremony on October 25, 2017. The event included tours of the building led by students, a ceremony led by Principal Kerry Beal, and a new dedication plaque that will hang near the site where a pipe burst causing flooding throughout the school.
Principal Kerry Beal said the ceremony is in recognition of all of the people that worked hard to make sure the Allen community could stay together last year after the flood, and then return to a renovated building. Beal said they are showing their gratitude every day that teachers and students are in classrooms. “We say thank you every day that we come to school,” Beal said. “We have been saying thank you every day since we started back at West last year, moved back here to Allen, and came back to school again this fall.”
School Board President Christine Stead highlighted that in many ways the broken pipe that caused the flooding has became really a symbol of strength. “What I have been able to have the privilege, as have all of us on the board have had the privilege to watch is this family become a tighter family because of this,” Stead said. “There are good things that can happen when there is something bad that happens, and everybody in this room helped make something truly wonderful happen out of something that was really not a fun day for a lot of us at the start. So thank you all for all of the work you do everyday to make these kids excited, do a great job of teaching and learning, and make Allen, I guess east, even better.”
